And Akman continues his academic and architectural works on building biology and ecology field since 1990. He started his professional education in 1981 at Mimar Sinan University, then carried on in New York University and Institut für Baubiologie + Ökologie. He realized worldwide ecological architecture projects and building applications in the Office of Lichtblick Architecture for 17 years, and then he returned to Turkey. Since 2007, he continues his architecture projects and applications mostly in Turkey. He also consulted as one of the specialists to the UN project through the years 2012-2014. He spearheaded the start of modern earthen architecture project class in Selçuk University in 2014 and continued his lectures there for 2,5 years. He initiated Building Biology elective class, and gave lectures on this subject at MEF University in between 2016-2017, for two semesters. In between 2017-2021, he gave lectures in sustainable architecture studio at İzmir Economy University. He has focused his architectural design and consultancy works on the Aegean region especially İzmir Peninsula. Moreover, he is doing various trainings and workshops on ecological materials and construction methodologies and participates as guest speaker in several conferences in this field. His articles and papers on building biology and ecology have been issued in national and international publications. Meanwhile, relying on his long-standing relationships with IBN-Building Biology and Sustainability Institute Germany, he co-founded Building Biology and Sustainability Institute Turkey- YBE in 2015. Since then, as the co-director of YBE, he is actively directing the institute consulting and training works. YBE main objectives are to develop the knowhow, ecosystem and expertise of building biology and ecology in Turkey and to increase exemplary designs, rehabilitations and constructions. He also one of the leading person in the formation and development of Natural Building Materials Working Group in 2018 which then enabled the foundation of Natural Building Materials and Methods Association-DYMD. My name is Fred van der Burgh, I graduated in Forestry and Regional planning at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands. With my background in sustainable forestry I gradually got more involved in the world of the main end-user of wood: the building industry. To enforce this I also graduated as a Building Biologist at the Institut für Baubiologie + Nachhaltigkeit.

I have done projects in Europe with the focus on the closing of the chain for bio-based products. One of the principles that I use, is to make optimal use of the own properties of materials for the function that they are applied within. Make use of the invention power of nature as much as possible. Both closing the circle and make use of the special properties of bio-based materials are coming perfectly together in the bio-based circular economy.

To accelerate the transition to a sustainable society I’m founder and board member of Stichting Agrodome. But focussing on only one of the many beautiful natural materials did not feel right for me, I wanted more. So back to the whole scope of bio-based and natural building materials and circular building methods. Healthy living is an important part of this for me. Benefit form the qualities, the good properties of natural materials. So to enforce this I also graduated as a Building Biologist at the Institut für Baubiologie + Nachhaltigkeit.

He was born in Gaziantep on 1977. He received his BSc, MSc and PhD titles on textile engineering major from Uludag University. After his PhD he studied on chemistry in USA. Nilüfer Kozikoğlu graduated from the architecture department of Istanbul Mimar Sinan University in 1995 and obtained a master's degree in architecture and urban design from the Architectural Association, School of Architecture in London in 2003. She continued her career at the Tuşpa NK agency for architectural design and currently focuses on digital, material and production design at Urban Atolye.

Designer featured in the Istanbul selection of the Adorno International platform for collectible design, her patent-pending concrete shells system Alveosis in collaboration with Fibrobeton and UA has been presented in IASS, MIT, and Digital Concrete conference, ETH. Selected for the Istanbul-London architectural exchange program by Architecture Foundation, some of Kozikoğlu’s major projects are German Red Cross Hospital, Masterplan Works for Bakırköy Psychiatry Hospital, IU Hospitals feasibility study, 100-bed Kayseri Psychiatric Hospital. She taught at graduate and undergraduate levels as adjunct professor at KadirHas, İzmir University of Economics, Yıldız and Istanbul Technical Universities, currently holds a 4th year studio and seminar course on computational design at Bilgi University. She is coresearcher at the TUBITAK granted Spacechase application for architectural and urban design co-run by the architectural Department, ITU and Tuşpa. Fatime Mermerci graduated from the Department of Architecture at Eskişehir Osmangazi University in 2012. Additionally, She completed the Boğaziçi DIBA Social Entrepreneurship Training. She has participated in various collaborative efforts with local and international organizations in the fields of sustainability and biomaterials in architecture. She worked as an assistant researcher in the Istanbul Bilgi University's Master's Program on the BILGI RDI - BIREPAN project. After graduating with a master in Architecture from Sustainable Architecture Department (ENSA Lyon / France) and writing his graduation thesis on co-housing and its opportunities in France, Matthieu Pedergnana decided to travel to experiment with natural building construction. After a few years of travelling, he started both teaching in workshops and researching earth plaster for my PhD in METU, in the architecture department. He has been working on several BAP projects related to natural construction and thermal performances of buildings as well as receiving a scholarship in a TÜBİTAK project on the topic. He has also been assisting with several hands-on courses in METU. In 2020 he decided to start working as a lecturer at Yaşar University to spread knowledge of natural construction to young architects. Since 2023, he has been appointed as assistant professor at Yaşar University, Department of Architecture. At the same time, Matthieu Pedergnana is a member of DYMD invested in the promotion of natural materials and the development of knowledge on these materials.

N. Ömer Saatcıoğlu is an Assistant Professor at Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Architecture. Saatcıoğlu completed his education at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Department of Architecture. He earned his master's degree from Istanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, Building Science Program with his master's on "Ecological Building Systems: Straw Bale Construction Systems (2001)". He obtained his PhD degree with his thesis titled "Simplicity and Complexity in Architecture (2012)" in the Architectural Design Program of the Institute of Science and Technology (ITU).
N. Ömer Saatcıoğlu played an important role in the design and construction of Turkey's first load-bearing straw bale building in Cumhuriyetköy, Istanbul. Saatcıoğlu has several papers, international presentations, and three patents; two of which are registered internationally, on straw bale construction and energy efficiency. His aim is to develop innovative and environmentally friendly straw bale panel designs suitable for the country's conditions.
Saatcıoğlu was a Visiting Researcher at the Center for Innovative Construction Materials (BRE CICM), Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, University of Bath, UK (2018). He performed tests on a new straw wall system he invented and prototyped. He has ongoing research on "breathing wall systems" that can be integrated with straw wall systems.
Saatcıoğlu's main research interests are straw bale design, green building systems and technologies, sustainability, ecological construction systems, ecological building materials, and "simplicity and complexity" in architecture.

During his METU Architecture education, she became interested in sustainable living and earthen building materials related to her profession. She developed herself on alternative construction techniques through the workshops and volunteer work she attended, and especially produced various earthen plaster, sgraffito and clay mural works. At the same time, she supported her practices with theory through her academic studies in this field. She completed her master's degree at the Izmir Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture, with her thesis titled "Comparative energy performance evaluation of hemp-clay as a building block material". Apart from an office experience for about a year in Ankara, she worked at the construction sites of the Gündönümü Farm-Tezekevleri Project and Sihirli Tohumlar natural construction projects. In 2017, while she was carrying out the Natural Life Center Project of Kadıköy Municipality with two colleagues, she also worked on natural construction techniques and materials there. In 2019, she was involved in the design and production processes of Marmaris Eco-Demo Children's House, and has been continuing her academic studies on sustainability since 2021. After establishing the Poçolana Works team with Arch. Mina Öner and Arch. Ceren Yıldırım, whom she met while working on the Tezek Houses project, she organized various workshops and seminars to share art and architecture with natural materials. As of 2023, she is a doctoral student and research assistant in the Department of Architecture at IZTECH, and as a natural building techniques and materials consultant in the Post-Disaster Reconstruction Plan of Architecture for All.

She completed her undergraduate education in architecture at YTU and worked in various offices and construction sites. The questioning of her practice lead her to be involved as a member to the Architecture for All Association in 2016. In 2017, she volunteered at the Tezekevleri natural construction site. She saw that a different production was also possible. In 2018 she started her master's degree at ITU, the subject of her thesis emerged after the disaster. A rapidly producible earthen structure could be designed to meet the housing needs that will arise. Even though she could not finish her thesis, she is currently working on this subject. She worked with Betül Ergün and Ceren Yıldırımon natural building construction sites, such as Farmhouses, Magic Seeds and Marmaris Eco-Demo Children's House, and was a part of the Poçolana team.

She continues her architectural practice in urban and rural construction sites based on participatory process with various stakeholders and with the use of natural materials. From 2019 onwards, she provides trainings on natural building techniques - mostly related to material production and clay plaster painting, both at home and abroad, including the Balkans, and with Gaia Kosovo. Furthermore she is involved to ‘We're All Made of Mud’ Project that introduces natural materials to young people with Youth Exchange workshops.
Her specialization is on earthen plaster and tadelakt (lime based plaster). She acts as a technical and materials consultant of the Architecture for All Association fort he Post-Disaster Reconstruction Plan.

After completing her undergraduate education in architecture at YTU, in 2016, following her interest in interdisciplinary studies and nature-inspired designs, she completed her non-thesis master's program at the Advanced Architectural Institute of Catalonia (IAAC) in Barcelona, which combines new production technologies with natural materials. In 2017, after working with recycling and natural materials at the housing construction site carried out by the Earthship Biotecture group, which builds off-grid, sustainable buildings, in the Perigeux region of France, she returned to Turkey and worked with Koluba Collective on Dung Houses in Silivri and Magic Seeds in Tekirdağ. She worked on construction sites. I am a graduate of technical high school and vocational school.
I entered the PVC and aluminum industry in 1995. Since 1998, I have been producing laminated wooden window and shutter systems, designed and produced by myself. I carry out projects at home and abroad with new building works and restoration of wooden works of old buildings.

He was born in Istanbul. He graduated from Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts. Performing arts and design studies began to include antiquities and sculpture during his academy education. Focusing on design, materials and art, he gathered almost all his works within this framework. He has been working on decoration with traditional techniques since his student years. He worked on the restoration of old works such as waterside residences, mosques and churches. He designed and produced products such as sculptures, furniture and accessories for various companies and individuals. Years passed while he was researching local architectural techniques all over the country and archiving photographs. This archiving still continues.

He started to keep the first notes of this book with the intention of writing a blog because of the recent popularity of the topics of ecological architecture and natural life, which he has been talking about for years, and the fact that everyone is starting to build houses in nature on their own, problems such as application errors, lack of technical knowledge, resource book problems, and the pressures in his close circle. Over the past three years, he collected all the information he deemed necessary, from school grades to construction site conversations, from consultancy to workmanship. The blog idea turned into a book over time and the first comprehensive local study in Turkey was completed. He continues to live in pursuit of new experiences in his own countryside with his family.

Derya Irkdaş Doğu is an accomplished Industrial Design lecturer and designer with a strong emphasis on biodesign. She holds a PhD and MA in Industrial Design and a BA in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. With a passion for sustainable and innovative design practices, she specializes in biomaterials and their applications in design. As an educator, she guides and inspires students in exploring the intersection of design and biology, fostering a deep understanding of designing with living systems principles and methodologies. She actively integrates biodesign concepts into her work, with a focus on biomaterial exploration, sustainable product development, and the utilization of natural materials. She is also a founding member of the Living Lab Izmir initiative, which is committed to cultivating a new design discourse in dialogue with non-human systems and fostering ecologically informed design practices.

She started working in the field of adobe construction in 1978. She joined the natural building materials working group while working on adobe durability (resistance to water and time), the use of technologies in contemporary construction with adobe, and ensuring the earthquake safety of adobe masonry structures. The technology obtained from the earthquake safety experiments of mud brick was applied in the TÜBİTAK 622 research building in 1995. The compressed earth building was not damaged at all in the 1999 earthquake. and in 2010, the earthquake resistance of the construction technique became official with the seismic layer test. She was born in Izmir in 1979. She received her doctorate degree in 2010 and received the title of associate professor in 2013 and professor in 2020. She has been the Dean of Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Architecture since 2022. While one of the main axes of her post-associate professorship work was biomimetics, studies at the intersection of nature-inspired architecture, biology and design; The other one progresses through modern architecture and architectural practice in Izmir. In this regard, she has national and international publications, patents and projects, as well as awards won in national architectural project competitions. She is one of the founding members of the Türkiye Biodesign Team.

In 2020, he completed his master's thesis titled "Designing the Architecture of the Future; Biodesign in Architecture". While he continues his research in the field of bio-architecture, the integration of biology-based living things into building systems within the framework of a collaborative approach, his current work focuses on the use of mycelium composites in architecture and different areas of design through BİOP Biotechnology company, of which he is the founding partner. Muvaffak Ercan graduated from Dokuz Eylül University, Department of Jewelry Design in 1995. Between 1996 and 2013, he focused on interior design and furniture manufacturing within Merih Yapı. He still continues to manufacture structural wood and trade timber in the Massive Timber company he founded in 2013. Structural wood manufacturing mostly; The supply of wooden elements to wooden building projects is done by pressing and wiping them with the lamination technique.
