Barbaros Bio-house

The design process of the Barbaros Bio-House began with the determination of the land providing the most appropriate environmental and topographical conditions for the formation of a healthy structure along with user needs. The building was set up by being divided into four separate hipped-roof masses; in each mass, the scale and proportions of the village’s traditional housing typology were referenced. Thus, the building with a total base area of 250 m² formed an architectural integrity that does not alienate itself from the surroundings, on the contrary, appends to the settlement texture with humility. 

The hipped-roof masses were connected to each other via a flat-roofed gallery volume. This gallery, allowing the main entrance in the north, opened to the inner courtyard in the south and provided spatial continuity. Thanks to the created courtyards and semi-open terraces, the building was optimized in terms of shading and cooling in summer months, and passive solar gain in winter months. 

In accordance with the principles of Building Biology, an approach prioritizing a low carbon footprint and human health was adopted; starting from the zero level, the structural system was designed as a timber skeleton. Earth blocks with high thermal mass capacity were used in the intermediate infill walls of this skeleton system; indoor comfort was supported by moisture-balancing thin clay plasters. Thermal insulation was provided with hemp-based insulation boards on both the exterior facade and the roof plane. The exterior surfaces of the main masses were completed with stone cladding; thus, an architectural character compatible with the local building tradition was created and the relationship of belonging and continuity established by the building with its environment was strengthened.
