Rammed Earth Application

SALT Beyoğlu Art Gallery Earth Floor and Seating Area Application

The winter garden on the fourth floor of SALT Beyoğlu has been transformed into an innovative public space that brings a breath of fresh air to the city through the use of earth-based applications. The project encompasses the entire floor and the surrounding seating benches, with earth—one of the most fundamental materials of building ecology—applied using contemporary rammed earth technology. Approximately 30 m³ of earth was compacted into 10 m³, creating a mass weighing around 15 tonnes. This process resulted in surfaces that contribute to a healthy indoor climate while creating a 100% recyclable and sustainable space.

Through contemporary production technologies, traditional adobe has evolved into a variety of unfired earth-based building materials. Among these, rammed earth—the monolithic wall and flooring form created by compacting layers of earth—offers one of the most aesthetically distinctive expressions of the material.

This pioneering application at SALT Beyoğlu goes beyond its aesthetic achievement. It raises environmental awareness among visitors while offering a contemporary response to the prejudices often associated with unfired earth materials.
