Öztürk House
Öztürk House is a pioneering architectural project in Türkiye in terms of the formal recognition and regulatory acceptance of natural building materials. It is the first residential project in which the structural calculations for a hybrid building system comprising timber framing, straw bale, and adobe were officially approved by the local municipality.
The design carefully integrates different ecological building methods through two separate volumes that run parallel to one another while functioning independently. One of the project’s most distinctive technical features is the way this separation is directly informed by passive climate-control strategies. Earth walls with high thermal mass were used along the southern façades to help keep the interiors cool during summer, while straw bale wall systems, providing superior thermal insulation in winter, were applied to the northern volume.
The roof design complements this climate-responsive approach. Separated from the main building volumes, the roof system creates an air cavity that prevents heat accumulated on the upper surface from being transferred into the living spaces, while allowing it to be naturally dissipated through air movement.
Shaped by Building Biology principles, this collaboration between engineering and architecture clearly demonstrates that natural materials can move beyond conventional applications to become part of contemporary architecture and formal building regulations.
